MARINTEK is entering the Deep Oceans

MARINTEK takes part in a four years multinational R&D programme on testing and simulation of submarines, Euclid NATO project “Submarine Motions in Confined Waters”.

The other partners are:

  • Qinetic, UK
  • Insean, Italy
  • Bassin, France.

Operation of submarines in shallow waters and waves require the best and exact knowledge about the physics involved, non-linear hydrodynamic effects due to steep waves in shallow water and interaction with nearby boundaries.

MARINTEK‘s task in the programme is to provide the seakeeping and manoeuvring characteristics of the submarine vehicle in such conditions. MARINTEK has the best laboratory, the Ocean Laboratory, for doing such studies. The depth in this basin can be adjusted to very shallow water and both short and long crested waves and current can be simulated at the same time. The requirements regarding the quality of the waves are in this study extremely high and are met due to our many years of experience working with complex offshore R&D projects for national and international oil companies.

Other parts of the studies are CFD analysis of flow around the submarine and simulation models to be implemented in training simulators in the navies. The CFD analysis is carried out by CFD norway as, a MARINTEK subsidiary company. They have 20 years of experience in CFD analysis within aeronautics and industrial aerodynamics. One of the recent projects was on the new large airbus on wing tip vortices and spacing between incoming airplanes.

The results from the testing and analysis will be implemented in simulators for decision support and training.
