Corrosion and surface protection

SINTEF has extensive experience within corrosion and corrosion protection, particularly in the following areas:

  • Stainless steel and high alloy materials
  • Aluminium and magnesium
  • Organic coatings
  • Metallic and metallic/ceramic coatings
  • Cathodic protection
  • Corrosion testing in general

Research and development, damage analysis, qualification of materials and procedures, testing and test development are performed. Modern and well equipped laboratories are used for:

  • Standardised testing
  • Electrochemical techniques
  • Chamber tests and cyclic testing (salt fog, UV, condense and climate)
  • Corrosion testing during mechanical loading
  • Autoclaves for testing at high pressure and temperature
  • Corrosion testing in erosive environments
  • Scanning Kelvin Probe (SKP) and Scanning
    Vibrating Electrode Technique (SVET)

We also have a seawater laboratory for long term testing in natural seawater. Combined with advanced techniques for metallographic characterisation and surface characterisation, this enables us to perform most types of corrosion testing.
