Combinatorial Chemistry
The CombiChem group is the focus of SINTEF’s activities within the development and application of Combinatorial and Parallel Approaches to accelerating the research and development process.
Discovery and optimisation of new molecules, materials or formulations usually requires the screening and evaluation of vast numbers of possible compositional and process conditions, a task that is both time consuming and expensive using traditional laboratory methods.
The combinatorial approach is a solution to this demand and aims at efficiently exploring the parameters that control the properties of a product. This means using a combination of rapid parallel or combinatorial synthesis of a large number of compounds and subsequently accelerates screening of the relevant performance of these compounds for a given application or property. Combinatorial chemistry has significantly impacted the drug discovery process in the pharmaceutical industry, and automated combinatorial chemical methods have been developed for systematic production and evaluation of materials in the field of both organic and inorganic chemistry.
