Responding to damaged vessels in arctic waters
The growth of shipping traffic in arctic waters is making growing demands on contingency planning for a new maritime route from Northern Norway and North-west Russia, past Iceland, to the USA and Canada. The consequences of incidents involving vessels that suffer loss of propulsion and/or manoeuvrability can be reduced if emergency vessels and large tugs are available. The project ”Responding to damaged vessels in arctic waters” is intended to survey transportation flows in the arctic and to determine contingency planning requirements as arctic transports of petroleum products increase.
MARINTEK is leading an international project group that also includes Vardø ProMor, the Icelandic Maritime Administration and the Central Institute of Marine Research and Design in St. Petersburg.
The project is being financially supported by the Barents Sea Secretariat. It forms part of a larger project that is run by the Northern Periphery Programme, and will be carried out between March and May 2007. Its results will be used to support an application for a main project on the topic of maritime safety in arctic waters, which will be submitted to the new Northern Periphery Programme.
