SIMAN
A program for estimating a ships manoeuvring and operational capabilities.
SIMAN can predict all IMO manoeuvres for single screw/single rudder and twin screw/twin rudder common merchant type monohull displacement ships. The program will give results of acceptable accuracy for the range of hull forms from the slender type to the full type with conventional stern or pram stern.
In addition SIMAN has built in a set of advanced allocation routines enabling the user to perform calculations on crabbing, stationkeeping etc under the influence of wind-, wave- and current forces. The number of thruster units required and the necessary power for each unit can be investigated.
General
A short summary of some of the key features of SIMAN:
- Complete set of manoeuvres governed by the IMO Interim Standards for Ship Manoeuvrability: turning circle manoeuvre completed by pull-out manoeuvre, zig-zag manoeuvres, direct and reverse spiral manoeuvres, full stop manoeuvre. A complete spiral manoeuvre can also be calculated.
- Twin screw/twin rudder or single screw/single rudder configurations.
- Azimuth propulsion and steering units included.
- Different types of high lift rudders included, giving the user the possibility to compare the manoeuvring capability of a ship with different rudder types. Also included user defined rudder, enabling the user to test a ship using their own specific rudder.
- Tunnel thruster in the bow and in the stern included (a maximum of 3 in the bow and 3 in the stern).
- Anti suction tunnels can be included in the bow.
- Capable of predicting manoeuvring characteristics in wind, waves and current.
- Crabbing and stationkeeping can be calculated due to an advanced allocation and control module.
- Calculate required power for stationkeeping or crabbing under a given set of environmental forces.
- Full time history presentation of parameters after each run (for example velocities, accelerations, rate of turn, revolutions, power etc)
- Summary of calculated output after each run.
- Ability to automatically compare calculated results with IMO criteria after each run.
User interface
SIMAN has a windows user interface enabling a fast and easy to use working environment.

The input data is divided into 6 main sections:
- Hull description, containing the main dimensions of the ship.
- Rudder description, containing the rudder type, dimensions and location.
- Propulsion description, containing the propulsion type, dimensions and location along with tunnel thruster input.
- Engine description, containing the engine properties, also giving the choice of running simulations with diesel engine or constant rpm.
- Hydrodynamic coefficients, containing the necessary linear and non-linear hydrodynamic coefficients.
- Environment description, containing the environment specific input for wind, wave and current forces.
In addition, the manoeuvre options for each type of manoeuvre can be given unrestrained.
Output
The results from each manoeuvre simulation are given in report files as well as in online summaries. The time history of important parameters can be plotted after each manoeuvre. The plots can be printed directly or copied into word processing tools to enable elegant presentation of the results in a report.
Below is given two examples of time history plots from a 10/10 zig-zag manoeuvre.
