Environmental limits

Numerical analysis by use of SIMO or MACSI, or model tests are used to establish the environmental limitations for a given operation, considering relevant criteria, such as:

  • Limiting capacity of the load handling equipment (load, stroke, velocity)
  • Slack wire avoidance
  • Maximum landing velocity, maximum allowable impact forces
  • Positioning tolerances

For subsea installation operations the wave zone crossing will often be the critical phase, while horizontal motion due to variable currents may be the limiting factor for a deep-water operation.

For a heavy-lift operation in air or a float-over, ballast controlled mating operation, impact forces during the final positioning and landing will often be the limiting factor for the operation.
