Rolling of Aluminium
Aluminium sheets have a large variety of applications within building, canning, lithography, decorative, capasitor, and automotive. There is an increasing demand for improved surface quality, reduced cost of processing, lower customer complains, and tailored products.
SINTEF offers core competence within process steps like strip casting, hot rolling, cold rolling, and final products.. We work in close co-operation with our industrial partners on the following tasks:
- Characterisation of the microstructure and mechanical properties;
- Characterisation of the mechanical properties including high speed testing;
- Surface generation;
- Recrystallisation control, precipitation and aging;
- Quantitative and qualitative characterisation of the surface with respect to both visual and functional properties;
- Surface treatment, such as response to etching and anodising, corrosion, and adhesion.

| During rolling, a main challenge is to understand the interplay between the main variables as seen in the figure. Especially the role of the surface must be determined since the requirements from other steps in the production must be taken into consideration. Because it is a complex situation, valuable information must be obtained during rolling under industrial conditions as well as realistic laboratory rolling (Figure: Norsk Hydro) |
