Pyro Metallurgy
Modern production of high quality metallic materials requires advanced knowledge of pyro-metallurgical processes – both on a scientific- and an engineering level.

SINTEF has key competence in electric arc / submerged arc production of Manganese, Silicon, Ferrosilicon, Chromium, and Nickel alloys. Plasma production of Silicon Carbide and carbon materials such Carbon Black and carbon nanotubes are also fields of expertise at SINTEF Metallurgy. SINTEF specialises in optimisation of processes and raw materials, using a combination of laboratory scale and pilot scale experimental techniques, combined with thermochemical modelling. SINTEF carries out research on topics such as:
- Plasma production of carbon nanotubes
- Development and production of grain refiners for steel
- Production of solar grade Silicon from ultra-pure raw materials
- Reduction kinetics of ores and other raw materials
- Testing the reactivity of reductants used in the ferroalloy industry
- Thermochemical modelling and reduction simulation of ferroalloy production processes
- Environmental auditing and assessment of pyro-metallurgical processes
- Determination of greenhouse gas emissions for a range of pyro-metallurgical processes
