Improving retention of simulator based training
Abstract
Quality and cost are important parameters for all types of learning used to enhance professional knowledge, skills and attitudes. The full mission shiphandling simulator is one of the most expensive training tools used by shipping companies. This project looks at ways of increasing the learning outcomes of simulator based training.
The project is a cooperation between shipping companies, simulator operators, simulator manufacturer and the Norwegian Marine Technology Research Institute (MARINTEK). Project length is 18 months, June 2003 to December 2004. Research Council of Norway (RCN) and Maritime and Port Authority Singapore (MPA) are project sponsors. The project has been accepted as one of the projects under the Memorandum of Understanding on maritime research, development, education and training between RCN and MPA.
Objectives
The principal objective of the project is to improve learning outcomes of simulator based training courses used by shipping companies. To fulfill this objective, the following sub goals have been defined:
- Simulator course adapted to specific training needs
- Pre and post simulator course activities specified, developed and tested
- Pre, on and post course evaluations forms used by course participants
- Evaluation results analysed and used as input for improvements of company specific learning systems
Activities
The project is broken down into 6 work packages. The first four will be described below the block diagram for the project.
WP 1. State-of-the-art study
- Generic models for evaluation of training
- Evaluation models used by simulator operators and shipping companies
- Evaluation methods and models to be used in the project
WP 2. Blended learning
- Blended learning definition
- Examples of blended learning systems
- Pros and cons for blended learning systems for shipping companies
WP 3. Case studies
- Specification of company specific case studies
- Development of case studies
