Oil Spill Response

In all activity where oil is involved, great efforts are put into preventing unintended oil spills, from exploration and recovery of oil from oil fields to the transportation and consumption of oil. Still there will always be a certain risk of oil spills, and hence there is a need to have capabilities to respond to oil spills, in temperate areas as well as in cold conditions.

 

After having been in the business for a long time, SINTEF covers a wide area of competence including behavior of oil spills based on oil properties and weather conditions, contingency planning, and monitoring and combating during field experiments as well as unintended spills. This knowledge is also used as input to numerical models to simulate the fate and effects of spills as a function of weather and countermeasures like oil recovery and dispersant applications. The combination of theoretical studies and experiments in laboratories and in the field gives us a good basis for developing new countermeasures or improving existing ones, alone or together with other companies or institutions.
