Oceanography

Current measurements off Nigeria

SINTEF's oceanography activity includes measurements, analyses and model development and application for wave and current description. The basis of our activities is the coastal environment and engineering disciplines, as well as short and long term predictions of the ocean climate for the oil industry. The offshore-related projects range from tropical to arctic waters.

Analyses
An array of custom-made time series analysis packages, statistical analysis packages and related programs are available:

  • Extreme value analysis
  • Duration analysis
  • Harmonic analysis
  • Wave analysis

Modelled ocean current speed (GeoSim)

Numerical models
We possess numerical models to cover most needs within ocean and coastal engineering, including 3 dimensional complete current models (GeoSim, SinMod). The models are expanded with modules that cover engineering applications such as spreading and dilution of effluent discharges (B-Jet, B-Pool), dredging and reclamation, waves, erosion and sediment transport.

    Measurements
State-of-the-art instrumentation is used for oceanographic data collection. Instruments include

    • ADCPs
    • Aquadopp
    • RCM-7, 8 and 9
    • directional wave buoys
    • waveriders
    • wave and tide recorders
    • high precision CTD profilers
    • weather stations
