Life-threatening tumour removed

Today, Gunhild is a healthy and active 61 year old lady, who loves going skiing and travelling to sunny spots - just like she used to.       Foto: Pål Laukli

On the 14th of June 2004, Gunhild Sollie from Røros in Norway was given the gift of life for the second time.

A life-threatening tumour in her brain was already the size of a plum.

A new operating technique helped the surgeons do the "impossible": The tumour was removed in a operation that took fourteen hours  – without damaging Gunhild's brain.

The brain surgeons can navigate the instruments with millimetre-precision thanks to three-dimensional images of the patient's brain.

The equipment is a result of unique cooperation between scientists, doctors and engineers at St. Olavs Hospital, NTNU og SINTEF, and has been commercialized by Mison.
